When it comes to the use of the self, there is a standard we can generally agree upon—because it can be observed that certain ways of using the body and mind are consistently linked with healthy functioning, well-being, and overall vitality. It is therefore reasonable to consider a way of using ourselves that leads to such positive outcomes as being "natural" or "right"—at least within a given context.

However, this should not be mistaken for a fixed or absolute standard of rightness. Rather, because this effective manner of use is rooted in the Primary Connection of the human mechanisms, it is inherently adaptable. Its appropriateness depends on the specific circumstances at hand. In this sense, its "rightness" is relative, not fixed.

The experience of learning about and applying this natural (though not necessarily usual) use of the self gives a person both a practical framework for decision-making and a deeper understanding of relative values. In learning to pause,  and consciously choose how to respond to a given stimulus, the individual must weigh different possibilities: Which direction should take precedence, and which should follow?

This evolving sense of judgment—based on indirect experience—becomes a reliable internal compass. It’s particularly valuable in the modern world, where external conditions shift constantly and cannot be navigated by a fixed code. Since the self is the instrument through which all actions—whether mental or physical—are carried out, it follows that a sound understanding of how to use the self provides a universal foundation for making effective choices across all areas of life.

....Mr Alexander created what may be truly called a physiology of the "living" organism.  His observations and experiments have to do with the actual functioning of the body, with the organism in operation, and in operation under the ordinary conditions of living - rising, sitting, walking, standing, using the arms, hands, voice, tools, instruments of all kinds.  John Dewey 1939.
